Message from the Principal

Persistence and attention to detail pays off!

As a Business and Enterprise specialist school we have, over many years, been actively involved in the Young Enterprise Scheme.

I am delighted to share with you that this year’s Young Enterprise Company, Dynasty, have not only won the Peterborough finals, but also East Anglia Young enterprise finals and are braced to storm the national finals against 13 other schools.

I will let Assistant Principal, Mr Abbott share with you the proud achievement of the students.  P.S None of this would be possible without the extraordinary input of Mr Abbott and Mr Rankmore, Young Enterprise Business Consultant.

Best wishes

Dynasty win hat trick of awards and qualify for the Young Enterprise National Final!
Dynasty, the talented group of 11 young entrepreneurs from Ken Stimpson Community School, have followed up their recent success at the Young Enterprise Peterborough Final by winning the East of England Regional Final.

Dynasty beat off stiff competition provided by the very best eight teams from Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norwich and Suffolk to claim their place in the Young Enterprise National Final in London.  This will take place over the course of the 5th - 6th July, with Dynasty now representing the East of England against the other 13 regional champions from across the whole of the UK and Gibraltar.  Alongside the Regional Winner’s trophy, Dynasty also took home the Creativity Award and Best Company Report trophy.

Dynasty’s Managing Director Ben Wright praised his company’s efforts: “The team have worked exceptionally hard over the course of this year to become an extremely successful company and we hope that this continues as we head to the National Finals.”

Kevin Abbott, the team’s Centre Lead, described his team as “an inspirational group of young people, with a superb work ethic and a truly professional approach to running their small business.” Dynasty are the first ever Peterborough team to make it to the prestigious National Final in London and their success marks the accumulation of 15 years of running Young Enterprise programmes for Mr Abbott.  He added “Supporting a Peterborough team to reach the London Final has been one of my teaching career goals.  This group have every chance of winning the entire competition and I’m incredibly proud of each and every one of them.  Dynasty and I wish to pay thanks to Ray Rankmore, our dedicated Business Advisor who has helped guide the team every step of the way”

Ray Rankmore has been supporting Ken Stimpson Post 16 students for the past five years and during this time the teams have reached the County Final every year (having won the Peterborough Final four times), reached the Regional Final four times and now achieved the hallowed place at the National Final.  Ray has had a fifty year business career in marketing and senior management roles working at a number of blue chip companies, including household names such as Kimberly Clark [Kleenex], Xerox, British Telecom and The Thomas Cook Group.  Before retiring, Ray was Chairman of Bedford Hospital NHS Trust for 5 years, Senior Non Executive Director of Milford Haven Port Authority, Chairman of Ledwood Mechanical Engineering, Chairman of Neville Johnson Offices and Chairman of Ergonom Holdings.

Young Enterprise is a nationwide competition involving over 17,000 students from more than 1,000 schools competing each year to be crowned Best Overall Company.  Nine months ago Dynasty started up their new business venture with high hopes and aspirations but little idea of what product they would go on to produce.  Over the course of their Young Enterprise journey they have designed and produced the ‘Activity Adventures’ series of educational activity books, for primary school age children.  The three books in the series- ‘The Raging Romans’, Ancient Egyptians’ and ‘Violent Vikings’- have proven to be a huge success and are now on sale in Waterstones, Peterborough Museum and the Flag Fen gift shop, as well as on the students own website [https://dynasty-ye.co.uk]  The team have made more than £4,500 in sales and still have stock to sell!

This year’s East of England Regional Final was hosted by the University of East Anglia (UEA), in Norwich.  Guest speaker Dr Kevan Williams, Director of Admissions for Social Sciences at UEA, said the competitors had shown skills that universities and businesses would seek “in abundance”, such as resilience, teamwork, financial know-how and problem solving.

The BBC Breakfast News will be filming the finalists throughout the morning on Friday 6th July, live from County Hall on the Southbank of London.  Business presenter Steph McGovern will then be hosting the evening awards ceremony.  Helping to judge the final will be Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer, who regularly tops lists of the most powerful businesswomen in the world.

Dynasty’s ever increasing roll of honour includes:

  • East of England Final- Regional Winner

Mental Health Awareness
During our recent Mental Health awareness week our Wellbeing group ran a competition to design a logo to represent wellbeing at Ken Stimpson.

We were delighted with the high standard of all the entries and this made it a very difficult task for our wellbeing ambassadors to chose a winner.  After much deliberation we are pleased to announce that Lacey Abbott, Year 7, has designed our winning design and this will now be used within school for wellbeing. Congratulations Lacey.

Behaviour Process
As part of our behaviour review process we have decided to implement a number of alterations.

Over this academic year we have been running detentions every night after school. Primarily these have been in place for students that have been exited from lessons. We have made the decision to alter how we administer this detention system.

From the week beginning 2nd July we will be running detentions on a Thursday evening. Again the major reason for detentions will be lesson exits. The process will remain the same, in terms of time; each exit will include a 30 minute detention. The major difference will be that they will be held back to back on a Thursday afternoon, with a maximum 90 minutes detention for 3 exits in a week. If a student receives more than 3 exits in a week, they will be removed from circulation and placed in the Internal exclusion unit (IEU) for a designated period of time (they will still complete the 90min detention). The HOH will decide the length of IEU as it would depend on the severity of the exits and other circumstances.

On a Monday parents/carers will receive an automated email informing them that their son/daughter has been placed in detention that Thursday and also informed of the length of detention. Failure to attend the detention will result in the student being placed in IEU all day during the following day. We feel it important to stress, these after school detentions will occur Thursday after school and cannot be completed during lunch times.

Could I also take this opportunity to invite you as parents to have a say in the developments occurring at school. I would like to create some time where I could meet with small groups of parents to discuss certain proposals and create the chance to work more collaboratively with you. These meetings would occur during the working day. If you feel these may be of interest to you, could you please email me at d.whales@kscs.org.uk. I would really like to have something in place before the end of this school term.

  • Lesson exit

A lesson exit occurs when a student’s learning behaviour falls below the expected level. Equally if a student’s behaviour begins to impact on the learning of other students in the class they will be exited, meaning the offending student will be removed to IEU for the rest of that lesson and will receive a 30 minute detention on the following Thursday (not the same week).

  • Internal Exclusion Unit (IEU)

If a student is placed in IEU they will remain there for between 1-5 days. Each lesson they are expected to comply and complete work. Failure to meet expectations will result in the length of time being extended or further sanctions being applied. Students placed in IEU will remain there until 4pm. However, those students whose behaviour has exceeded expectations will be permitted to leave at 3.45pm.

As previously mentioned in the newsletter earlier this year, this will be the first time that KSCS will have participated in the Dorset Charity Walk.

On Thursday 14th June I hosted an information evening, thank you so much to everyone that attended and for all the support that has already occurred since that meeting. To ensure that everybody has all of the information, I have listed a number of key points below:

  • The walk departs from the turning circle (next to the tennis courts) on Thursday 12th July at 9am, returning around 2.30pm on Monday 16th July.
  • On Monday 9th could you please bring in your tents and bags. These will be transported via transit van.
  • Lots of the key information can be accessed via the website www.malcolmwhales.co.uk including an equipment list and sponsorship forms.
  • Information is regularly shared via the Facebook page please ‘like’ as this is updated before and during the walk.
