Message from the Principal
New Intake
There was a high level of excitement this week, as we welcomed our new Year 7 intake into school for a busy programme of induction activities. Year 7 is full at 210 students for the second year running and we look forward to welcoming the students and their families into our school community officially in September. The aim of the induction was to introduce our new students to their school, their new teachers and their classmates. The event culminated in a welcome evening on Wednesday for parents, carers and students. Prom Tuesday concluded with the annual Year 11 Prom, organised superbly this year by Mr Abbott and the Young Enterprise Team, Legacy. KSCS descended upon the Marriott Hotel and students arrived in style in a variety of vehicles. There was definitely a lot of money tied up in the hotel’s car park! The prom-goers really looked the part in their formal attire and enjoyed a meal before a whole host of fun nominations were shared and the disco began. There was also a photo booth and chocolate fountain this year. The weather was great and allowed us to bask in the early evening sun the gardens of the hotel. Thanks go to all the parents, carers and teachers who turned out to support our Year 11 students, too. See the photos here! Former Student Success This week we received more superb news about the achievements of a former KSCS student, Sean Wheatley. Sean describes his adventures in his own words. ‘I completed my BSc (hons) in Sports Science at Kingston University in 2010, graduating with a first class degree and winning the school of life sciences prize for outstanding performance in sport and exercise science. I was then awarded a full fees scholarship to study for my masters (MSc) in sports science at Loughborough. I passed this with distinction in 2011, and was subsequently awarded a Carnegie bursary (covering tuition fees, research costs and paying a stipend for living costs) to study for my PhD at Leeds Beckett University. My thesis was titled "Fatness, fitness and cardiometabolic health in young people" and looked at how using different indices for representing obesity and different methods of scaling cardiorespiratory fitness influenced the relationships of "fatness" and "fitness" with cardiovascular disease risk in obese children and in University students. I passed my PhD officially in March this year, despite having some fairly major setbacks owing to illness and equipment issues. I'm currently working as a research officer and part-time lecturer (in biomechanics and physiology), roles I also filled alongside my PhD over the last few years, at Leeds Beckett University; and am looking to secure a full time lecturing position somewhere soon.’ Congratulations to Sean and his family. If you know of any similar good news about any former Ken Stimpson students, then please do get in touch. We really appreciate hearing about, and being able to share, these successes.
Best wishes Richard Lord Year 8 MFL ‘Have you say’ speaking competition
Wednesday 29 June I took 6 of our best Year 8 Italian speakers to TDA for the annual Year 8 speaking a foreign language competition.
After a short mini bus ride in the rain we arrived at TDA school and were given a very motivational speech about the importance of languages by Dr Tony Morgan (Director of Routes into languages). Then the students were escorted to classrooms to practise and perform their dialogues, our students were very brave and I was extremely proud of them all for taking part. All students were presented with a certificate by the Deputy Mayor. Our runners up were; Emily Knox & April Isham. Congratulations also to; Joseph Aque, Matthew Rudd, Katie Blant and David Cox.
Mrs Nuzzo World of Work Day: Tuesday 5 July 2016
Over 75 students from Year 9 embarked on their World of Work Day placement on Tuesday where they were shadowing a parent/carer/friend or relative in the work place. For most it was their first taste of the adult working world.
A chance to be inspired, motivated and enlightened about work and different opportunities available. The feedback and response has been overwhelmingly positive and extremely rewarding for our students and businesses involved. Students expressed amazement at the amount of job roles in one company and some businesses have even spoke about future volunteer and job opportunities. It highlights how well our students have impressed and how well they have entered their placement with a keen desire to learn. Well done to all involved. Adam Billitt Young Enterprise
On Thursday 16 June, Legacy, our Post 16 Young Enterprise company returned to Robinson College Cambridge to take part in the Young Enterprise Regional Final.
After winning the Area and County Finals in April our team were representing both Peterborough and Cambridgeshire and taking on the very best teams from across the East of England. The team did superbly and showed further improvement from their already impressive performance at the County Final. Unfortunately, Legacy’s DIY baking kits were beaten by the Socket Pocket (a mobile phone holder which hangs from a plug socket) and for the third year running our Young Enterprise journey has come to an end just one step away from the national final in London. Mr Abbott’s quest for a place at Nationals goes on! Mr Abbott New Virtual Tour of the School
Over the past term, the Digital Leaders have been working on the new Virtual Tour of the school campus to be placed on the school website. This new version not only showcases the facilities on the Ken Stimpson site but also contains updated pictures of the school and improved picture quality for the viewers.
This updated virtual tour now includes more areas of the school than ever before, presented in an easy to follow format that parents and visitors of the school can use to get a good feel for life at KSCS. We have also included some examples of student work in their respective Faculties and plan to add more examples of this throughout the next academic year.
The Digital Leaders Attendance
Success is still in first position. There has been little movement last week so the race is still on for the House attendance winner at the end of the academic year. You can help your House by attending school every day until the end of the term.
The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today. Sharon Blackledge What's happening at KSCS?
