Safeguarding health checks -  Project K9 this week

All schools should be free from the threat of anything that may harm anyone.  From time to time we need to test this, just like we need to rehearse evacuations. On Tuesday as part of a whole range of events planned to reassure everyone we carried out a proactive measure to test this claim.  This involved partnering with the Police and an independent organisation to bring trained dogs to search for the potential of any illicit substances, not just inside the school but in the local community.

The aim of the day was to demonstrate we are being proactive and unapologetic in our approach to ensuring a safe school and community for each one of you that we serve. 

I wish to send out a clear message that this school, alongside all others schools in the city, must be free from the threat of anything that may harm anyone. Testing this is important to check our integrity but it should also sends out a clear message about how highly we take our safeguarding values. There will be other unannounced events that will take place in the immediate future as we are committed to ensuring the highest standards at KSCS.

Thank you for the positive feedback.  I feel proud that this single action further confirms that we are ensuring the safeguarding is effective and always the foremost of what we do.

Talent and Pride within our school

Thank you to the Choir and the students involved in both the amazing Snowman event at the New Theatre on Wednesday and the wonderful Wizard of Oz.  After watching both events I came away glowing about the talent inside our school.  We have so many talented students and staff that make these extra special events happen.  This as it does not happen by magic, but instead by the input of dedicated, talented people.

I take my hat off to all of them for the exceptionally dedicated effort to make the Snowman and Wizard of Oz happen.

Students have been learning about how superbugs are formed, the importance of good hygiene, using antibiotics correctly and the importance of vaccinations.

They investigated the affect of superbugs on society and why more people need to be informed about the dangers of poor hygiene and using medicines correctly.

Students have also got the opportunity to participate in a nationwide competition to produce a poster/poem/event or any other idea to promote a healthier society and possibly win a prize!

If any student would like to enter the competition they can ask their Science teacher for a print out of the competition leaflet and hand their finished piece to Miss Farrell by the end of this term.

Most of the lessons were delivered by Post 16 students and this week has seen them complete the final lesson of the programme.  

Congratulations to all the Post 16 students involved.

Well Being

After going 2-0 up, Ken Stimpson looked strong, with good passes and two great goals from Daisy and Paige. Jack Hunt came back at half time with more focus and caught us up 2-2, however with some great defending and two more goals the girls won 4-3!

Both students had a fantastic time, learning new key skills such as public speaking, campaigning and a little on politics, such as what’s the difference between the house of common and House of Lords.

Both Paige and Kelsey loved their accommodation (ensuite rooms) and the food, gammon steak and roast dinners. They feel they have increased their confidence, met new people and are really pleased they took on this exciting opportunity and challenge.

So proud of you both!

Head Girl and Head Boys – Adam Marshall, Alina Rasul, Emily Barfield, George Courtier, Paige Posnett, Kelsey Mitchell, Nathan Hall, Isabel Skinner, Daniels Baklagins and Jenna Pierce attended and gave lots of good suggestions.

Mrs Purdy chaired the meeting and Head Girl Jenna Pierce Year 11 took the minutes.  Lots of things were discussed – please see below of the outcomes.

• More opportunities after school for High Ability Learners and challenges in lessons.
• Wifi now open for ALL Year 9 Students
• More staff in the canteen
• P16 to possibly serve drinks/snacks in new locations in school
• Canteen to be divided into separate areas for Year 7&8 and 9-11 students
• All homework to be recorded on Connect
• Possibility of an extra first aider in the medical room
• Staff present to help with the one way system in Maths Corridor and stairs
• The heavy doors in block 4 and 1 to be removed to save time and ease the flow
