We have been impressed with the maturity of the students in engaging with this process and I am grateful that so many parents have been able to take time out of their busy schedule to attend.  Equally, I fully understand when this is not possible, but I thank you for the very high attendance at the Pathways evening on Wednesday 8 May.

I have also been impressed with the Year 11 students; so many examinations but they have been superb in their ability to cope with the early demands and the rigour that these throw at them.  I know how much effort and dedication has gone in over many years to ensure your son or daughter are best placed to transition onto the next stage of their education.  This includes acknowledgement of both staff and you as parents.  We all wish them the very best and stand confident that they will fulfil their potential.

Finally, I wish to remind parents and students that regrettably some students are falling back into the concerning habit of bringing their bicycle to school and not locking it.  On Thursday we checked and there were 22 bicycles left unsecured.  We were able to remedy this using locks that we have purchased to help students that may have forgotten their own.

A temporary loan of a bicycle lock is available at no charge if your child arrives at school without one. Given that Ken Stimpson is a dual use school any unlocked bicycles will mean opportunist thieves can seek them out and we are often powerless to catch them even with CCTV.

The Duke visited the cancer ward and was given a tour of the centre’s newly- created garden area which has recently been transformed by The Malcolm Whales Foundation and its team of volunteers. The team, made up of young people including a number of students and staff from KSCS, former patients and local business representatives, have turned a gravel patch into a colourful, inviting and tranquil space for patients and staff to use.

Rob Hughes, Chairman of North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Hinchingbrooke Hospital, said: “I was really pleased to introduce Damien Whales, Founder of the Malcolm Whales Foundation, who was able to show His Royal Highness the amazing transformation that has taken place in our centre garden, thanks to a huge community effort from local people and organisations. We have already had some very positive comments from our patients, whose appointments will no doubt be brightened by the chance to sit and relax in the garden.”

Mr Whales commented “the students and staff from KSCS have been fantastic! I was delighted that many of our garden volunteers were students that had already raised money via the Dorset Charity Walk last year. Even more pleasing is that a large proportion of these students have already signed up for the 2019 Walk this July and will be continuing their fundraising efforts once again.”

Mrs Price, a parent of one of the students said “well done to all involved. What a brilliant opportunity for my daughter to be part of this project from start to finish and to take part in the walk again this July. Experiences like this help our children understand just how important and rewarding it is to give back. Thank you Mr Whales and your wonderful team.”

It is for this reason that secondary school is an important time to equip our young people with the skills and knowledge needed to understand, protect and sustain their mental health throughout their school career and beyond. We are delighted to be part of the Peer Education Project, a school-based programme which aims to do this through PSHE lessons. All of the lessons are delivered by Post 16 students, who have completed their training this week and will start delivering the lessons to Year 7 students in the final half term of school.

Well-being

The programme also aims to provide students with the information and tools to make informed choices in the future. Over the course of a few months our students have been completing various tasks, which contributed to the creation of an autobiography with the help of mentors who currently study at Cambridge University. The final part of the ‘All About Me’ project was to create a 'shoe box' which portrayed various elements of their life e.g. family, childhood and hobbies/interests. All the students involved put so much hard work into these boxes and should be very proud of themselves! Jamie J, Emily B and Finley E were all chosen as winners during the Project Showcase on Monday evening and have the privilege of having their shoe boxes on display at Peterborough Museum for the next 2 weeks! Well done to everyone!

Pre-exam Booster Sessions for week commencing 20 May

The following sessions will take place for year 11 and post 16 students next week, immediately prior to their examinations. Please encourage your son/daughter to attend the morning boosters, as it is their last chance to ask subject teachers any remaining questions they may have.  Students can also claim their complimentary breakfast between 7.30am and 8am prior to any morning examinations.
