Message from the Principal
Welcome back! Whilst very early, it has been a wonderful start to the new term and I wish to congratulate the vast majority of students for turning up in the standards expected and with the correct attitude to learning. I will share the fantastic achievements following the summer examination results next week, but instead the focus this week is to clarify the cycle rack availability.

With the growth in the school, the cycle racks are now positioned at the front of the building.  The ordering of cycle racks did not go to plan, hence what appeared to be a shortage.   However, following the arrival of the students on Wednesday, we were taken back by how many students were choosing to cycle to school.  We counted at least 300 students and our previous capacity was 200!

We have quickly addressed this by ordering more cycle racks and in addition, assigned a dedicated compound to meet the surge in demand!  We are now confident that we can accommodate this pleasant and surprising increase in this very welcomed mode of transport to school.  However, it is very evident students need to bring a lock.  One in three bicycles were left unlocked.   Whilst the school has CCTV coverage, it is important that your child uses a lock when parking their bicycle at school.

Please check that your child has a cycle helmet, appropriate lights and other equipment to keep them safe when cycling to and from school.  Finally, I urge all students to be mindful of road safety issues and as parent/carer you discuss this with your child.  A significant number of accidents across the city relating to young people, is to do with their perception that motor vehicles can preempt what they are going to do and react in time.  Being mindful of this and other users of the road and paths when travelling to and from school goes a long way.

On another note some key dates to put in your diary:
On Tuesday 11 September is our Celebration Evening starting  at 5.30pm with refreshments and food.  Invites have been sent out to students and their families in Years 11-13 to celebrate their amazing examination success this summer.

For parents of Year 10 – Welcome to Key Stage 4 Evening is on Monday 17 September starting at 5.45pm until 7.00pm.  We welcome all parents to attend to find out more about your child’s new  GCSE/vocational courses.  Short presentations will be made from not only English, Mathematics and Science but also from the subject teachers of your child’s chosen pathway.  There will be information leaflets and hopefully time to discuss matters with key staff who will be present on the evening

Ps – some of you may have noticed the revised reception area.  A significant amount of work has taken place over the summer holidays (and it still continuing),.  The major changes that you will need to note is that you now need to use the intercom system to gain access to the school reception area.  In addition, there is now one reception area in the visitors area where staff will meet and greet you.

Best wishes
