Mathmatical Studies (Core Maths)
Core Maths is a comparatively new course which leads to a level 3 qualification. It helps you maintain and extend valuable maths skills from GCSE and apply them to areas within finance and statistics within real-life scenarios.
The course includes maths for personal finance, for example:
- Interest rates, credit, taxation, and financial problems;
- The analysis and use of data;
- Estimation;
- and some statistical techniques.
Studying Core Maths will support the mathematical content of some other subject areas, in particular:
- Biology,
- Business & Economics,
- Geography,
- Health & Social Care,
- Psychology,
- Sociology, and
- Sports Science.
There are two written examination papers, with some pre-release material.
There is no coursework component.
The skills developed in the study of mathematics are increasingly important in the workplace and in further education. Courses in Biology, Geography, Psychology, Business Studies expect mathematical competency which can be supported by the study of Core Maths. There are now a number of universities that recognise the benefit students gain from Core Maths to support their university studies in some subject areas and subsequently make alternative (lower) offers, usually reducing one grade.
Examples include:
- Architecture,
- Business,
- BioScience,
- Chemistry,
- Pharmacy,
- Psychology, and
- Social Science.
