Ken Stimpson Community School - Newsletter 24/11/2017
KSCS Newsletter November 24th 2017

Message from the Principal
I wish to clarify that all schools are statutorily required to place training days within the school academic year (unfortunately we cannot schedule these during the six week holidays). We are required to schedule five days in total for this purpose and our second training day is on 1 December. I have previously mentioned this date in earlier newsletters but just to remind parents we will be closed to students on this day.

Last Friday, during break time, we did our bit to raise money for Children In Need. We had several stalls set up around the Sports Hall that were organised and run by students and their form tutors. I am pleased to report that in total, we raised £370.53. Well done to everyone who took part!

The Year 9 subject evening is almost upon us (Tuesday 5 December 4-7pm). It is the precursor for the important Pathways Process that all Year 9 students and yourselves engage with, to ensure that pupils are guided onto studying the most appropriate qualifications later this year. If you have not made appointments with your son/daughter’s subject teacher then you can do this by clicking here.

Best wishes

The Malcolm Whales 12 hours of sport
We are introducing The Malcolm Whales 12 hours of sport as a school charity event for the first time on the 8th December.

Over recent years the 12 Hours of Sport event has become a huge success at a number of other secondary schools. This event alone has helped The Malcolm Whales Foundation (charity number 1146719) raise almost £10,000, contributing to the foundation raising more than £135,000 over the past 9 years.

The Malcolm Whales Foundation is a charity that has been set up to raise awareness and provide support for those suffering or recovering from cancer, especially in young people.  It works in partnership with a number other charities to offer support to young people in need. More information about these partnerships can be seen via the website or via social media.

The sporting event is open to all students in KS3. It runs from 7am to 7pm on Friday 8 December. Students who take part will have donated £20 to the charity. On the same day there should be a number of other schools taking part in their own Malcolm Whales 12 hour event.

This event and the charity have had an enormous positive impact on the students who have taken part. I am looking forward to Ken Stimpson getting involved and helping to impact young people in a less fortunate position than themselves. I know that Ely College have currently 98 students signed up, a record for any school. The challenge has been laid down…

Letters have been given out in assembly this week for anybody that is interested. If another letter is needed, they can be collected from the PE department or admin. Replies need to be in by Wednesday 29 November!

The charity is always on the lookout for cancer related causes to support. If you think the charity may be of help, further infomation can be found via – Twitter @Malcolmwhales, Facebook @TheMalcolmWhalesFoundation or via the website www.malcolmwhales.co.uk

Many thanks for your support.

Year 9 Subject Evening Pathways Process
Year 9 is a very important time as the following 3 years of the curriculum will lead to a range of qualifications at the end of Year 11. These GCSE qualifications will enable students to progress on to further study in our Sixth Form or College courses. It is vital that correct choices are made.

The particular combination of courses are followed by students during Years 10 to 11. It is an exciting time!

Our aim is to ensure that all students are on GCSE courses that:-

• They know they can do well in.

• Are subjects they enjoy.

• Reflect their interests and personal qualities.

• Help them to learn in the best way for each individual.

• Keep options open for the future.

We will be beginning discussions with the students and yourselves about our curriculum offer and by doing so we aim to have a robust curriculum provision presented on the Year 9 Pathways evening.

Important Dates in the Process:

• Tuesday 5 December 2017 - Year 9 Subject Evening - 4:00-7:00 pm.

• Tuesday 6 February 2018 – Year 9 Pathways - 6:00-7:30 pm.

• W/C– Monday 19 February and Monday 26 February 2018 – Year 9 student and parent individual guided pathway meetings.

Opportunities at Ken Stimpson for Technical Theatre Training
Do you have an interest in Sound Engineering, Lighting or Stage Design?

I have always realised that the Performing Arts are much more than just performing on stage as a Musician, Dancer or Actor. None of these performances can happen without the ‘techies’, those people that work backstage in lighting, sound, costumes, stage design etc. These areas account for a large percentage of careers in the performance sector working in theatres, concert halls, arenas and festivals to name but a few.

At the school we have always encouraged students with an interest, to get involved in these areas and we have taught them as part of our Music options both at GCSE and Post-16 as well as including them in our extra-curricular clubs. Indeed, for the first time, our next production will have a full student ‘techie’ crew with everything being operated by our students rather than adults.

To increase our offering in these areas I am excited to be able to announce a collaboration with the Young Technician Scheme. This is an exciting opportunity for our students to take part in a recognised scheme with experienced professionals in the sector. Open to all year groups (7-13) the scheme will be running a weekly 2-hour training session after school from 4-6pm. As part of this the student participants will learn to operate professional level equipment as well as the possibility for opportunities to work as part of the ‘crew’ at  external events such as at the Broadway Theatre and external music festivals. The Scheme has a proven track record of students going on to careers and apprenticeships with the BBC and other high profile organisations. There are also opportunities to gain qualifications in the sector through the scheme.

There would be, unfortunately, a charge for this activity of £60 per half term (equating to approximately £6 per hour) although please do not allow the cost to prohibit showing an interest. Full details of the company and the possible opportunities are detailed in the pdf which is included in the links section of this newsletter. They also have a promotional video that can be found here.

If this exciting opportunity is of interest to you and your child, please sign up on the sheet on the door of the Music Recording Studio. This is not a commitment to take part, just a register of interest. Following this, Pino Soccio, the Manager of the Scheme, will come into school and take any questions you may have.

In advance of this, should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.

National Roast Dinner Day
Feedback from residents and the Scheme Officer;
roast dinner day

I just wanted to say a big ‘thank-you’ for inviting myself and the residents of Sutton Court and Sweetbriar Lane along to the school for a meal on National Roast Dinner day, we had a lovely time.

The food was delicious, the room was decorated beautifully and the students and staff helping out that day were very welcoming.

In particular I would like to give praise to the young students involved, they were so helpful, friendly and polite. They were so confident and outgoing, a real credit to the school and testament to the hard work put in by students and teachers alike.

Girls Football Tournament
I had the pleasure of taking 9 female students to participate in the Peterborough United football tournament, alongside their Coach Ellyssia Crutchfield.

The format was 6v6 at the Mick George Training Academy, and the teams that had entered were; KSCS, AMVC, NPA, Stamford Welland, Stamford High and Deeping School.

The girls under guidance from Coach Crutchfield seemed to have enjoyed a positive display but I know deep down they are gutted when they realised how close to victory they were.

First game was against NPA, where the girls dominated but had trouble finally putting the ball in the back of the net. Eventually they did, to come away with a 1-0 victory.

It was a very similar story in the second game against Deeping School, where KSCS were guilty of missing easy chances, but we came away 1-0 winners.

The third game was much different and the girls found themselves 2-0 down but fought back to earn an impressive 2-2 draw with Stamford High School.

The fourth game was against local rivals AMVC, which once again saw the girls 2-0 behind, and fight back, but they ran out of time so could only manage the 1 goal, losing 2-1.

A change of team saw the girls draw 0-0 in their final match against Stamford Welland. The end result finishing 3rd in the league.

In the semi final, against Stamford High, they battled their way but let in two quick goals but never recovered and were unfortunately beaten 2-0.

Sophie Robinson; Had little to do in goal in the first couple of matches then needed to be on her toes afterwards.

Summer Yonga - Excellent in defence, solid and always trying.

Morgan Kirkland - Supported Summer as much as possible, even if not always successful in tackles.

Charlie Harrison - Year seven gaining valuable experience ready for next year.

Gerda Vilcinskaite - Another year 7 who assisted KSCS in winning matches.

Daisy Blakemore-Creedon - A more prominant Year 7 girl who showed some real talent.

Ashleigh Hustler - Tirelessly chased the ball down to gain possession.

Kiana Birch - Tried bossing the midfield and plenty of assists.

Georgia Kulesza - Scored goals, missed some, but never gave up even when outnumbered.
