KSCS Newsletter July 7th 2017

Message from the Principal
I attended the Voyager (to be known as Queen Katherine) Academy Art and Photography exhibition this week to view the hard work of the young people in Peterborough but also to enjoy the fantastic art work of the students from our school that federate to study Art or Photography at the Voyager School.

The quality of the art and photography work was superb and congratulations to The Voyager School for their guidance of students in enabling to produce very high quality work. Of course, I am going to a little biased in saying I thought the art work of the KSCS was even better!

Congratulations to Chiara Beeby, Jennifer Brooks, Fen Partridge, Chloe and Lauren Greenwood on their excellent pieces of art/photography work. You will see a sample below;

As we rapidly draw to the end of a very productive year I urge you consider buying a ticket for the forthcoming Return to the Forbidden Planet production which runs from Tuesday to Friday next week starting at 6.30pm. Tickets available now through www.ticketsource.co.uk/kscs> or on the door.

Arrangements for September

I wish to confirm that all year groups will start back on Tuesday 5 September at 8.45 promptly. The first part of the morning will be dealing with timetables assemblies and setting the correct expectations for another successful academic year. With this in mind I wish to re- publish the uniform expectations to ensure that we are focussing on academic conversations and not anything else that could be avoided by reading the rules. In particular, I wish to emphasise the following areas:

* Earrings need to be discreet

* Only dark coloured coats - no hoodies or track suit tops are allowed into school.

* Piercings of any type are not permitted.

* Skirts are not less than 5 cm from the knee and not made from lycra. The school is introducing to the new Year 7 and where possible any other year where replacement skirt/trouser is required, the official trouser and skirt with the KS logo. This provides assurance that you daughter/son has approved uniform.

Attached is the uniform guidance which you can download by clicking here.

It very easy to spend many lines of text emphasising what the vast majority of students commit to on a daily basis, so, I wish to thank the you as parents/carers in supporting our expectations.

Best wishes

Vertical Tutoring Update
In assemblies this week students had an introduction to the new vertical tutoring arrangements and received letters detailing the new pastoral team who will be responsible for them.

Essentially, the four Lower School groups will be split across the six Middle School tutor groups within each house, joining with the new year 10  (Years 8,9,10). The new year 11 will be placed into one of the three Upper School form groups within each House, with post 16 (Years 11, 12, 13).  Finally year 7 students joining us in September have been placed in one of two Lower School groups in each House.

The House Teams have worked hard to compile the groups and I hope your son/daughter is looking forward to this important academic stage at Ken Stimpson Community School.  Students will join their new tutor groups on Monday 10th July 2017.   This will enable students to gain confidence and get to know members of their tutor group and new tutors in the final half term before the summer break. Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to become fully aware of the academic and social demands of life in Middle and Upper School at Ken Stimpson Community School.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact, in the first instance, your son/daughters new tutor.

World of Work Day: Monday 3 July
Over 50 students from Year 9 took part in World of Work Day this week. An opportunity for them to shadow a friend or relative in their place of work and experience their first taste of an adult working environment.

It was amazing to see the numerous career sectors our students ventured into- ranging from retail, administration, education, healthcare and even military to name but a few. Although only for a day, this programme is considered a great taster opportunity for our students prior to their Year 10 work experience. All of our students went in ready to learn and represented Ken Stimpson Community school with pride. A huge thank you to all students and staff involved.

Alternative Sports Day Events for Year 7 and 8
Over the last two weeks, the PE faculty have been busy running the non-sports day events in preparation for sports day itself on the 17 July.

However due to adverse weather conditions on Tuesday 28 June we were unable to complete a number of events for year 7 and 8. The table shows the timings for next Tuesday 11 July when these events will take place. Students are reminded that if they are taking part in the events that they will need to have their PE kit in school.

"Just keep swimming” Dory - Disney

Aspire stay in the lead this week. Can they hold on until the end of this acadamic year? Research from the DofE suggests children who miss 7 days schooling each year see their chances of gaining 5 good GCSEs reduced markedly. Lets do our best to keep attendance high so that you are in the best possible position. We still have a few weeks to ensure we make the most of our time.
