Message from the Principal
Tolerance and understanding In light of the terrible events both in Manchester and London, I wish to commend staff and students in not only respecting the minute silences, but also for the way in which they have understood that the perpetrators of these horrible and unjustified crimes are inhumane and should not be associated with a particular religion or creed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those affected.

Proposal to Change the April Training day to December 1 2017

I wish to move the April 2018 training day forward from Monday 16 April to Friday 1 December 2017.  Please could you advise if this change in the training date would adversely affect your family.  Any concerns should be directed to Mrs Ware via her email address pa@kscs.org.uk. This consultation will last until the end of the month.

Mayor’s Afternoon Tea event June 22

It is an honour to have a group of Ken Stimpson students to attend and serve at the Mayor’s Tea Party on June 22. The Mayor, Councillor John Fox has invited a selection of our students. These students will be chosen by  the Heads of House. I look forward to the students sharing their experiences with you in a future newsletter.

Werrington Neighbourhood Council Awards

I am pleased to announce that Mrs Ayre, Mr Billitt, Mrs Gregg and Mrs Patman received awards from the Werrington Neighbourhood Council in recognition of their long standing service to providing essential careers and advice to the students at our school.  These awards acknowledge the enormous support they have provided to many students across the school. Congratulations to all of them!

Years 11, 12 +13  – almost there

Staying with the theme of paying tribute, the Year 11-13 students have been working their way through a series of lengthy and arduous public examinations.  The application of the students and their resilience has been truly amazing and I hope that this translates in to a set of results that they richly deserve. Please note that the A level and BTEC Level 3 results will be released on August 17 (9.00 am for Year 13 and 10.00am for year 12) and GCSE and Level 2 BTEC results will be released on August 24 (9.00 am for year 11).

Parents Forum

After seven years of attending and taking minutes at every single Parents Forum, Mrs Peacock, Mother of Michael in year 13, attended her last meeting.  Mrs Peacock has taken the time to write in her own words her reasons for attending the Parents Forums. I wish to express my gratitude to Mrs Peacock for her contribution to the school through her input at these meetings. I would also like to thank those parents who have taken the time to attend and engage in what is happening in our school.

Alumni

Through our alumni networks it is a real privilege and is heartening to publicise the achievements of our students that have left KSCS.  This week we celebrate the achievement of Aaron Shaheed. Sometimes we do not always find out through our alumni network channels, the progress of our former students and I would ask if you are a parent/carer and wish us to know about your son/daughters achievements then please contact Mrs Ware (pa@kscs.org.uk).  I very much look forward to recognising their achievements.

Best wishes

World of Work Day: Monday 3 July
A reminder that Year 9 World of Work Day will be taking place on Monday 3 July. Letters have gone out to all Year 9 students and parental and employment permission slips need to be returned no later than Friday 16 June.

World of Work Day is a day spent shadowing a family member or a friend at work and a chance for you to find out something about the world of work first hand. This is a great opportunity not be missed and a fantastic introduction to work practices and expectations prior to Year 10 Work Experience the following year.

Soke Orienteering and Kwik Cricket
Before half term, we welcomed our feeder primary schools to take part in the orienteering and Kwik cricket competition.

Orienteering had six teams of Year 3 and 4 students entered and required them to use their map reading skills to navigate themselves around the school site. Once they arrived at a checkpoint, they had to take a letter and use those letters the spell the hidden word. The winners of the competition were Welbourne School, many congratulations to them.

Thursday before half term also saw us welcome Year 5 students into school to take part in our annual Year 5 Kwik Cricket competition. The students were split up into equal teams and competed against teams within their groups. The teams that were top of each group progressed to the semi-finals. Both teams in the final came from Werrington primary school. It was a very close final game, which saw Werrington Team 2 triumphant. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the sports leaders that assisted with this event.

Community Arts Evening
The Community Arts Evening is a celebration of not only the arts at Ken Stimpson but also an opportunity for our students to work and collaborate with like-minded community arts organisations.

This is alongside items from our own Dance, Drama and Music groups as well as a preview of our next school production and also a combined item.

We are also really pleased that Performing Arts will work together with the Art and Design Faculty this year incorporating the GCSE and BTEC Art Gallery as part of the evening. This will be on display in the foyer and the post-16 common room.

Doors will open for the Art Gallery at 5.30pm with the performance commencing at 6.30pm. Refreshments will be available throughout the evening. Tickets available in advance online or on the door; £5 for adults, £3 for concessions, £13 for a family (2 Adults, 2 Children). Save 10% by booking in advance online.

NHS Discovery Day
On Thursday 25 May, myself and six other Year 12 students were lucky enough to be given the opportunity to go to the NHS Discovery – an event which allowed us to explore different careers into the NHS

We were given the opportunity to go to the hospital first for a tour. Myself and another student  went on the pharmacy tour where we got to learn about the complexity and many roles that a career into pharmacy includes other than just distributing prescription drugs. I believe I can speak for everyone in saying that it was an amazing opportunity which allowed us to start to make a decision on what we want to do after A Levels regarding the NHS.

Junior University Programme
On Monday 5 June 60 Year 10 students took part in the first part of the Junior University Programme led by graduates from Anglian Ruskin University Cambridge.

Students took part in a number of activities exploring the process of applying for a university place, from choosing courses to accommodation to planning finances.  The second part of the programme will be on Wednesday 21 June when the students will complete a project based on Media Studies and Criminology.  This programme forms a small part of our extensive Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance Programme.  On 12 July all Year 10 students will be given the opportunity of completing a Career Profiling assessment on-line, an intensive programme which helps them discover what skills they have and what careers they are most suited to.  Reports from this assessment will be shared with parents with their reports.
