Message from the Principal
This week we welcomed parents and carers to the Year 9 subject evening. With an overall 69% attendance I wish to thank those who attended the evening. However, if there was a barrier to prevent you from attending then please contact your son/daughters Tutor or Student Support Officer who will endeavour to share with you information on your child's progress.

The next few weeks are a busy time, not least for parents of Year 9 students, who are invited to the Pathways Evening 1 February, 6.00-7.30pm. This will help us decide which are the best subjects for your son/daughter to study in Year 10. It is a vitally important evening where key information is explained therefore I urge you to book this in your busy diaries now.

Parents' Forum

Next week is the second Parents' Forum held on Wednesday 25 January 6.00-7.00pm in the Conference Room. The proposed presentations and focus will be on:

  • The launch of new PiXL Edge pastoral programme lead by Mrs Boughton, Assistant Principal
  • English At years 10 +11 explained, led by Ms Martin, Assistant Principal, Head of English
  • Q&A and AOB

Educational Visits - acknowledgement of enrichment opportunities

I wish to thank the Art and PE faculties, and Careers staff for taking students away from school this week and the parents for their support in allowing this. It does provide a much more enriched experience than can be provided within school. I know the students will have or will appreciate the time taken by staff in order for these events to take place.

Letters and communication

I am always keen to gain feedback from anyone connected with the school or community. A good flow of communication between us vital and I accept that there have been times where, for one reason or another, we need to work harder. Following feedback from a number of parents, it appears letters getting home have been a particular issue, leading to various consequences.

With this in mind, all letters will now be attached to this newsletter on a weekly basis and emailed out where we have your email address. This will not stop letters from physically going home, however, I hope it should provide another avenue to ensure the messages get home to you!

Best wishes

Stem Cells - Post 16
On Tuesday 17 January Tom Stoker came into our biology lesson to give us an insight into what a degree in Medicine involves, which was very helpful for people, such as myself, who are looking to go to university.
Stem Cell

Dr Tom Stoker explained how he has successfully converted fibroblast cells from the skin into neurones.

He will use these to research Parkinson’s disease.

He then showed us a presentation on cellular reprogramming, which was closely linked to the a-level biology specification that I am currently studying. This presentation really enabled me to understand stem cells and treatments and has made me feel much more confident about answering exam questions on the topic. I really appreciated this opportunity.

London Art Trip
On Tuesday 17 January, a group of Key Stage 4 and 5 students were taken to London to visit the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Tate Modern to gather research and find artists for their current Art projects.

Students were given an Art trip challenge, to find specific monumental pieces in the V&A and then the Tate. We all had a fantastic day, especially since our lunch break was spent on the coach seeing the sights of London with our very own tour guide...Mr Housley!

We are very excited to see the work the students create showing inspiration from the Art they saw and the experiences they had.

Attendance
"A boat doesn't go forward, if each is rowing their own way"

Aspire hang on to the lead this week but each House is capable of raising their attendance figure. Can you help your House and help us achieve our school target? All you need to do is to keep coming into school. If you have been sick, you can return 24 hours later. Your future self will thank you for it.
