Message from the Principal
Last week Year 11 students received a superb life in Post16 experience, either at KSCS or at a local college.
Thank you goes to a wide range of staff for enabling the students to realise: 1. To get where they want or need to be is not an easy and straightforward path; 2. The facilities and provision at our school’s sixth form is superb. Our track record is excellent in ensuring students have a very high success rate onto their preferred destination of choice, whether this be University, Apprenticeship or employment by choice. The Year 11 will have now received individual feedback based on their pre public examinations undertaken before the end of last term. As I publish this newsletter, the Year 11 students will be going home with an overview of their PPE results. Please look out for this coming home with your son/daughter. My comments to year 11 this week have been based on the ten things that they should not do – a reverse of the positive mindset. However, sometimes a timely reminder when the pressure is on, is correct to remind them of negative habits they may revert to in a time of pressure: We will be addressing this issues alongside your wonderful support in the next few weeks to ensure these barriers are reduced. I look forward to meeting parents and students as part of the Year 9 subject evening on Wednesday 18 January 4- 8pm. I urge you to make appointments with your child’s subject teachers as this is the precursor with for the Pathways Evening. I am pleased to report that as part of our enhance career provision, a substantive number of Year 9 students will be interacting with local businesses to help them understand their Pathways choices are one key ingredient to their future employability. Best wishes Bryan Erwin House Points -2016/2017
In assemblies this week Heads of House informed students the House Points totals so far this academic year and the placings to date. The House points between all four houses are very close at this stage of the academic year.
The House Points are awarded from PLTS competitions such as Performing Arts talent show competition in December 2016, parents evening events, sports competitions and half-termly House attendance. At the end of the academic year we will also be adding individual student Connect Points to the totals to identify the House competition cup winners. Good luck to you all both individually in terms of positive Connect points and within the events and competitions for your houses this term. Local Visiting Artist
On Tuesday 10th January, we welcomed local artist, Janet Bates into the Art Department to work with students from year 9-13.
Janet Bates completed Lino cutting workshops with year 9 and 10, using aerial views of the local landscape photographed using a drone. Janet then completed a paper cutting workshop with year 11, 12 and 13 students, working from insects and insect cocoon patterns and shapes, creating some beautifully intricate layered designs as you can see here. I hope that all students enjoyed working with professional and feel inspired and positive about the potential of following a career in the Arts. Mrs Bamber Year 11 Recent Maths Topics
As well as extensively closing the gap on misinterpreted areas of the recent PPEs students have also been continuing through the syllabus. Please find below the topics students have recently studied or are shortly going to start studying:
11a1/b1/a2/b2
11a3/b3/b4
11a4
Students can use the www.hegartymaths.com to find extra tuition and questions on these topics as well as using this great resource to consolidate areas they are not yet fluent in identified after the recent PPEs. Mr Donnelly Attendance

Aspire hang on to the lead this week but the gap between 1st and 2nd is closing! Let's make 2017 a good year for attendance. To do this we need all students to keep coming into school every day. Please remember to try to book all medical appointments outside of school hours and to try to come into school with coughs/colds and sore throats. This all helps to achieve our goal of excellent school attendance leading to academic and personal successes! Sharon Blackledge What's happening at KSCS?
